Community Involvement/Making a difference

  1. YouTube video clip about Hoops of Hope (founded by Austin Gutwein at 9 years old in 2004) as an introduction- Share with students how even someone as young as they are can make a difference; they can just start with something small in their own community. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUlmImvtq4c Other videos are available on the page.
  2. Nerf ball- Use for a fun activity to brainstorm ideas in which they can be involved in making their community a better place; one student will start with an idea and pass the ball to another student who will then come up with another idea, much like “pay it forward.”
  3. Canned food- Discuss how students can collect canned food items to donate to the food bank.
  4. Wrapping paper- Discuss with students how, as the holidays are coming up, they can come together to help give gifts to those who are less fortunate. As a class, I would like to be able to brainstorm ideas for gifts they could give as a class or individually. For example, each student or small groups of students could wrap a gift of school supplies or art supplies to give to a child in need.
  5. Shell- Use as an example of a beach cleanup day.
